How can you create diverse events that are more welcoming to LGBT and minority attendees? Here are three simple tips from Mark Dumschat, a blogger for EventMobi, a global event technology company.
Create a Statement
Make sure that your organization creates and displays a statement about its diversity policy. For example, this statement might say: “Our organization provides equality of services and care to everyone, regardless of people’s age, disability, gender, gender identity, race, religion or belief, or sexual orientation,” according to Dumschat.
Implement a Zero-Tolerance Policy
It’s very important to implement a zero-tolerance policy for racist or homophobic language at your meetings and events, Dumschat points out. This policy should appear in event-related materials such as the event’s website and program guide.
Provide Staff Training for Diverse Events
Lastly, don’t forget to provide training for all event staff and volunteers to educate them about LGBT and race issues. This training should include how to defuse any potential problem such as negative comments, slang or jokes that arise at the event.
