Golf tournament planning can be an overwhelming task—but it doesn’t have to be.

These 10 tried and true golf tournament planning tips can help your event achieve its goals.

Define Your Mission

Everyone working on the event needs to understand: 1) the why and 2) the who. By defining the event goal and the golfers, you can plan a unique and memorable experience.

Budget Accordingly

After determining the scope of your tournament, secure a comprehensive proposal from the course to avoid any surprises. Fees include, but are not limited to: greens fees, cart fee, practice balls (or range fee), beverages (beer, wine, liquor and non-alcoholic), food and other miscellaneous fees.

Get Support From the Course

Involve the golf professional staff in the planning of your event. Tap into their experience. Ask them to create an event microsite so it’s easy for your players to find information and register for your event.

Gifting Essentials

Your gift bag is the first impression of your event, so give it some real thought. Treat your golfers to memorable items like a quality golf shirt or other apparel that they will use and that will remind them of the event.

Choose Committee Chairs & Define Roles

Each aspect of the tournament needs a committee chair to that the planning and execution run smoothly. Create a work plan and revisit and revise it regularly to keep everything moving forward. Make sure your staff/volunteers know their roles. Prior to the event, have staff/volunteer meetings to make sure everyone is on the same page.

Do a Post-Mortem

After the event, have an after-action meeting to go over the event and see where improvement is needed for the next year. Invite the professional staff of the golf course to lend their expertise and support. Also, if you use volunteers, hold a thank you dinner to show your appreciation and celebrate a job well done!
