Coming out of last week’s IMEX America 2024 were a host of industry prognostications, given at sessions and press events throughout the event. The upshot of many: The world of meetings and events is changing fast.

Following are some key points made at the 2025 AMEX GBT Global Meetings and Events Forecast, led by Julie Flynn, Director of Sales at Amex GBT Meetings & Events, and Jennifer Nelson, Head of Strategic Meetings at American Express Global Business Travel, who offered valuable insights into the future of the industry.

As we look ahead to 2025, Flynn and Nelson noted, there are some important trends event planners should know about:

Embracing the Digital Revolution

The digital realm is no longer just an add-on; it’s becoming the backbone of event planning. Virtual and hybrid events are here to stay, with technology seamlessly blending the physical and digital worlds. Expect to see more immersive experiences powered by augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR), creating engaging environments that transcend geographical boundaries.

Sustainability Takes Center Stage

Gone are the days when sustainability was just a buzzword. By 2025, it’s predicted to be a non-negotiable aspect of event planning. From zero-waste initiatives to carbon-neutral events, planners will need to incorporate eco-friendly practices at every stage. This shift isn’t just about being green; it’s about meeting the expectations of an increasingly environmentally conscious audience.

Personalization: the Name of the Game

One-size-fits-all events are becoming a thing of the past. The future lies in hyper-personalized experiences tailored to individual attendees. AI-driven algorithms will analyze participant data to create custom agendas, networking opportunities, and content recommendations, ensuring each attendee gets maximum value from the event.

Wellness and Mindfulness Integration

As the lines between work and personal life continue to blur, events in 2025 are expected to place a greater emphasis on attendee well-being. Look out for mindfulness sessions, wellness corners, and health-focused catering options becoming standard features rather than optional extras.

Flexibility: the New Normal

If there’s one lesson from recent years, it’s the importance of adaptability. Future events will be designed with flexibility at their core, ready to pivot at a moment’s notice. This could mean having contingency plans for various scenarios or creating modular event structures that can easily scale up or down.

Data-driven Decision Making

In 2025, gut feelings will take a backseat to data-driven insights. Advanced analytics tools will provide real-time feedback on attendee engagement, allowing planners to make on-the-fly adjustments to improve event outcomes. Post-event analysis will become more sophisticated, offering deeper insights for future planning.
