IRF and SITE are promoting awareness of the incentives industry as a career path for the next generation by creating a new curriculum and seeking volunteers to teach it.

According to SITE’s just-released 2024 Incentive Travel Index, attracting and retaining industry talent is a top concern among planners—with 44 percent of North American respondents noting it is a long-term challenge.

As incentive planners look to the industry’s future, it’s clearly critical to recruit and foster a workforce that possesses both technical skills and passion for motivating improved performance.

Planners may know that the incentives industry offers a wide variety of exciting career opportunities. However, SITE has found that the lack of awareness of what the industry does and its career opportunities has been a major barrier to recruiting people entering the workforce. Incentives content is not commonly found in colleges and universities.

In part, SITE’s message to incentive planners on this issue reads: “The incentives industry is at a crossroads. With over 75 percent of organizations facing critical staffing shortages, now is the time to act. We need passionate, experienced professionals like you to help shape the future by bringing awareness of this vibrant industry to the next generation.”

IRF and SITE have therefore launched the Future of Incentives Workforce initiative to promote awareness of the incentives industry as a career path for the next generation—creating 60- and 80-minute curriculum modules that IRF and SITE volunteers can present to college and university students to help increase the talent pipeline into the incentives industry. The material is available at the SITE Learn Hub.
