As a leader in sustainable MICE tourism, Madrid offers event organizers various innovative tools to create eco-friendly, impactful meetings. Through the Madrid Convention Bureau, the city encourages planners to design events aligned with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) outlined in the United Nations 2030 Agenda.
From energy-efficient venues to eco-conscious suppliers, Madrid ensures that your event leaves a lasting impression and contributes to a better, greener future.
MICE Sustainability Guide
To further support organizers, the MICE Sustainability Guide, available for download on the Madrid Convention Bureau’s website, provides an in-depth approach to sustainability from environmental, economic and social perspectives. This comprehensive guide analyzes the roles of all key stakeholders involved in planning a meeting and offering practical advice on how to implement the SDGs at every stage of your event.
PLUS, Legacy with US Online Platform
In 2021, the Madrid Convention Bureau introduced PLUS (Platform for Legacy with US), the first comprehensive digital tool for sustainability and legacy management in the MICE industry. Like the MICE Sustainability Guide, PLUS is built around the 17 Sustainable Development Goals set forth by the UN. Recently enhanced, this platform allows organizers to generate detailed sustainability reports for every event held in Madrid, offering actionable recommendations to minimize environmental and social impacts before the meeting even begins.
After the event, PLUS also calculates the carbon footprint, providing insights into emissions across three categories:
Scope 1: Direct Emissions
Scope 2: Indirect Emissions
Scope 3: Supply Chain Emissions
This allows organizers to better understand and manage the full environmental impact of their events, making PLUS an invaluable tool for those committed to sustainability.
Leaving a Legacy and a Positive Impact
The Madrid Convention Bureau is deeply committed to responsible practices in all its initiatives, ensuring sustainability is embedded throughout the event planning process. This includes carefully selecting suppliers that adhere to sustainability criteria, prioritizing the reuse and recycling of materials and designing projects that create a positive social impact by collaborating with local organizations in Madrid.
By integrating these practices into your meetings, you can ensure that your event contributes to both environmental preservation and the community, further enhancing its legacy and impact. Another key objective is to support associations and private organizations seeking to ensure their conferences or events contribute to measurable, lasting change that benefits the city.
There is a growing belief among host destinations that meetings should have a positive impact, prompting an increasing number of associations and companies to align their missions and visions with the objectives and needs of the locations where they hold their events.
To support this commitment, the newest tool available to organizers is the Directory of Social Organizations, which features a wide range of tertiary sector entities in Madrid. This directory offers a diverse overview of initiatives that can be integrated into the agenda of any meeting or event, enhancing its positive impact. Accessible through the PLUS platform, it can also be downloaded in Spanish and English from the Madrid Convention Bureau’s website.
By choosing to hold your meeting in Madrid, you can leave a lasting, positive mark on the city while enjoying the many attractions it offers as a destination for events that prioritize sustainability. This commitment is driven by the understanding that together, we can build a greener future for Madrid and the planet.
