Madrid is a city dedicated to environmental sustainability. Its green spaces, parks, gardens and thousands of trees significantly enhance the quality of life for its residents and provide enjoyment for visitors, including those coming to the city for an event, a meeting or for an incentive trip. A cultural hotspot known for its museums, nightlife and shopping, Madrid is the second most sustainable city in the world and the second safest capital in Europe.

Sustainable Awareness

Madrid’s unwavering environmental commitment is displayed in the Madrid 360 Environmental Sustainability Strategy. Established in 2019 to address climate change, this comprehensive plan implements multiple measures to encourage low-carbon renewal methods by focusing on innovative ways to foster renewable energy use, efficiently manage water resources, reduce emissions and waste and promote sustainable transport throughout the city.

Tree City of The World

Over 55 percent of Madrid’s streets are lined with nearly 300,000 trees. This extensive urban greenery makes Madrid the world’s second-greenest city. Since 2019, Madrid has received the prestigious “Tree City of the World” award, a recognition given to 200 cities across 22 countries. The accolade underscores the city’s steadfast commitment to green initiatives and environmental stewardship.

Parks and Recreation

Madrid boasts over 200 parks, gardens and natural spaces, encompassing approximately 16,000 acres of lush greenery. These green spaces offer planners a blank canvas for creating myriad outdoor experiences, including teambuilding activities that take the attendees out of the convention spaces. Among its numerous parks is El Retiro Park, a historical treasure and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Madrid Rio Park stretches six miles along the picturesque banks of the Manzanares River, providing scenic beauty and recreational opportunities. Casa de Campo Park, spanning over 3,500 acres, is perfect for leisure activities, sports, and outdoor recreation. Soon, the city will welcome the Metropolitan Forest, a 46-mile-long green belt featuring wide, open spaces that will enhance Madrid’s commitment to environmental sustainability.

A Leading MICE Destination

The Madrid Convention Bureau (MCB) has developed the MICE Sustainability Guide and the PLUS (Platform for Legacy with US), a digital service designed to help event organizers effectively manage the sustainability of their events. This platform, which aligns with the 17 goals of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, helps organizers generate comprehensive sustainability reports for every meeting hosted in Madrid. These reports include actionable recommendations to minimize the environmental and social impacts of events held in Madrid.

The platform also calculates an event’s carbon footprint. The MCB is dedicated to supporting associations and private organizations by ensuring that every event leaves a lasting, positive impact on the city. By leveraging the MICE Sustainability Guide and the PLUS platform, Madrid continues to lead the way in sustainable MICE tourism, setting a high standard for other cities worldwide.

Additionally, the Bureau offers meeting planners the Directory of Social Organizations, which provides event organizers with a list of associations, foundations and NGOs working in areas such as sustainability, corporate social responsibility, social inclusion and other related fields.
