Peppermill Resort Spa Casino in Reno, Nev., is making headlines as the only resort in the United States whose heating source is totally provided from geothermal energy produced on property. Since 2007, the resort has used geothermal energy to heat the water for the Tuscany Tower, including the 43,000-sf Spa Toscana and two outdoor swimming pools. A recent $9.7 million investment completely overhauled the existing system and installed wells to handle heating for all of the resort’s water and heating. The cold water is cooled by a pre-chill system using outdoor temperatures instead of chillers, and the hot water is heated by geothermal energy.
Peppermill has taken dozens of other steps, including installing 30 plasma air generators to purify the indoor air; adding a water recycling system for all laundry services; going paperless in many departments; and partnering with Clean the World to recycle all soaps and bottled amenities from guest rooms.
The 1,623-room Tuscan-themed resort offers 106,000 sf of newly renovated meeting space, including a 62,000-sf grand ballroom.
