Vasa Museum
One case in point is the early 17th century Vasa Museum, built around a Swedish warship—carrying 64 cannons and 450 men, 300 being soldiers—that capsized within minutes of starting its maiden voyage. The meticulously preserved and elaborately carved ship is really a work of art and telltale of local traditions, superstitions and social stratification of the time that set the tone for the “art” of war. Huddled around the mighty ship in the Ship Hall, groups of up to 800 seated/2,000 standing regularly partake in candlelit dinners with Nordic cuisine and guided tours around the ship.
Like a Local
Though known the world over for its Viking heritage, the vibrant indigenous Sami culture spans Northern Sweden, Norway, Finland and Russia. In Jukkasjärvi, groups can visit the Sami Siida Camp and try their hand at navigating a reindeer sled or warm by a fire with a warm cup of ligonberry while listening to the elders sing Kvad-songs, tell stories and otherwise share their rich cultural heritage. An old wooden Sami church rests nearby, the oldest surviving church in Lapland, with an interesting mix of Sami and Lutheran heritage. Also of interest is the Ice Hotel, a viable hotel with warm and freezing accommodations for the adventurous carved anew by artists the world over every year.
