My Biggest Meeting Nightmare…

“About ten years ago, I did a 500-person meeting in Arizona. I trusted a new operations manager to manage the program. Although she was not a direct report (I was in sales), I thought I had looked over everything carefully and assumed her ops manager had as well. Long story short, the 20 needed kosher meals for every day of the meeting were mentioned somewhere along the line, but never had been arranged. It was awful and I felt so bad for the guests who had literally fresh fruits and vegetables for the entire meeting. That was many, many years ago. Now, dietary needs are always at the very top of my check list. The big lesson I learned was that in a pinch, you can get a kosher meal (albeit not a great one) from the airlines.”—Laura Yates, president, Dovetail Event Partners

“An event I planned was canceled midway due to an unexpected ice storm. The storm was so severe that many attendees were stranded at the hotel where the event was held. Workers at the hotel’s restaurant were unable to make it in to work. Since the majority of the guests at the hotel were with our event, our team tied on aprons and started taking orders, serving food and even washing dishes.”—Hope Brookins, event planner
