The luxurious Park Hyatt Washington D.C. turned to New York designer Tony Chi for the recent multimillion dollar update of its guest rooms and lobby.

And why not? Chi, principal and founder of tonychi, was responsible for the full redesign of the luxury hotel over a decade ago, in 2006.

“My concept for Park Hyatt Washington D.C. was to bring together a dynamic and attractive modernism with classic American style,” said Chi.

His new look is inspired by D.C.’s bright spring blooms, specifically its cherry blossoms. In the lobby, Chi created two separate areas with a living room feel, with sofas, white oak floors, area rugs and floor lamps. One area has a communal table; the other features a variety of cozy seating, including Windsor rocking chairs. Chi’s trademark is his vibrant glass murals, and here he does not disappoint. In the lobby, the focal point is a floor-to ceiling custom glass cube depicting cherry blossom trees, created by photographic glass artist Amanda Weil, and the rooms also feature custom glasswork by the artist.

Touches of home have been added to the rooms as well, with custom-designed plaid wool rugs, rich walnut platform beds with leather headboards and reading lights, and, in the suites, daybeds, walnut flooring, and even antique game boards and hardcover books. The Park Hyatt has 12,000 sf of flexible meeting space in 17 rooms.

In keeping with the design sensibility, the hotel’s popular restaurant, Blue Duck, has installed a kitchen garden on the roof and is hosting chef’s table dinners on the outdoor patio featuring freshly picked ingredients, complemented by garden-inspired cocktails.
