Baking bread in communal bread ovens, a tradition that dates back to the 14th century, was once a cornerstone of community.

Luckily, here are three dynamic Southern hotels bringing that community bread-making experience back for groups to glean a similar sense of camaraderie through unique “bread make and break” activities.

Craddock Terry Hotel

The Craddock Terry Hotel in Lynchburg, Va., recently partnered with local bakery, Lorraine Bakery, for group bread-making classes. The bakery is located within walking distance of the hotel, allowing for groups to easily take a break from their meetings to learn artisan bread making with colleagues. And don’t worry—you’ll get to try your fresh-baked goods when they’re delivered to your hotel room later in the evening.

The Restoration

The Restoration in Charleston, S.C., recently debuted a completely renovated meeting space, which now includes a full kitchen and living space for unique and relaxed gatherings. Conveniently located in the heart of downtown, the hotel gives attendees the option to enjoy the relaxed, Southern charm of the city at neighboring restaurants and shops—one of which is Callie’s Biscuits. Charleston’s local biscuit hot spot hosts hands-on biscuit-making workshops, where guests can create and enjoy their very own buttery treat.

The Ritz-Carlton, Sarasota

This luxury landmark located on Florida’s Gulf Coast near Sarasota’s city center is just minutes from premiere art venues, restaurants, shops, nature sanctuaries and fishing. Jack Dusty, the property’s waterfront restaurant, adds to the mix of fun by offering interactive bread-baking classes with Executive Pastry Chef Lyndsy McDonald. A nod to the history of sailing, attendees learn how to make Naval Brown Bread in a tin can, a unique method inspired by the tight space and limited resources in a ship’s kitchen.
