Groups can explore New Zealand’s natural wonders while also experiencing the magic of “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings.”

Among the rolling green hills of Waikato’s farmland, a unique treasure awaits: unprecedented access to the set of the award-winning Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films. With the final installment of The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies due to hit cinemas in December, an event at the Hobbiton Movie Set is a truly memorable incentive option or special addition to a conference program.

New developments at the site mean guests can tour the round-doored hobbit holes and quirky village scenes of “The Shire” with the chimneys and lights of Hobbiton burning. The new themed Party Marquee adjoining The Green Dragon Inn has expanded the capacity for a banquet of hearty “hobbit fare.” Guides are available to discuss the magic behind the movies and a flexible attitude allows for creative options, from a feast to a festival complete with archery and costumed jugglers.

A Hobbiton incentive program can be rounded out with activities making the most of New Zealand’s stunning natural scenery and unique indigenous culture.

A 45-minute drive takes you to Rotorua, home to Maori cultural center Te Puia. Guests are welcomed onto the marae (traditional meeting house) before participating in a hands-on “haka” war dance experience. After admiring the geothermal wonders of Te Whakarewarewa Thermal Reserve, including the famous geyser Pohutu, guests can enjoy a gourmet meal prepared within a natural cooking pool.

Alternatively, more adventurous guests could travel to the Waitomo Caves for an adrenalin fix of caving and blackwater rafting, or to simply marvel at the galaxy of glowworms.

International access is via the airport in Auckland, an 11-hour flight from the West Coast of the United States. Inbound or outbound travelers can enjoy the city’s world-class restaurants and shopping or partake in one of many activities, whether it be sailing an America’s Cup yacht on the sparkling Waitemata Harbour or sampling the fine wines on picturesque Waiheke Island.

These are just some of the amazing opportunities on offer as New Zealand aims to take business events “Beyond Convention.”
