The Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau (GMCVB) plans to celebrate Miami Heritage Month in style with “The Art of Black Miami” campaign kicking off the month-long program.
“The Art of Black Miami” campaign takes places Dec. 6-10 alongside the city’s uber-popular Art Basel Miami Beach in an effort to spotlight art and diversity of the African diaspora. The GMCVB’s Multicultural Tourism Development Department is spearheading the campaign, which will encourage attendees to explore the city’s artistic diversity through interactive artworks and projects, pop-up art galleries and artist meet-in-greets. Twenty-five new local artists will be added to last year’s portfolio of 25.
“This year’s ‘Art of Black Miami’ kicks off the art season and GMCVB’s Miami Heritage Month, providing culture-seekers with special events, activities and offers in some of our most diverse neighborhoods,” says GMCVB President and CEO William D. Talbert III. “The GMCVB is committed to ‘The Art of Black’ campaign because it promotes the creative influences of African Americans, Caribbean Americans, Latin Americans, African and global artists who contribute to the fabric of Miami’s diverse artistic community.”
Here are five neighborhoods hosting special events during “The Art of Black Miami” that you should put on your radar:
Liberty City
On Dec. 2, the African Heritage Cultural Arts Center will host an Art Blues & Barbeque Festival to celebrate the Black Miami community.
Historic Overtown
From Dec. 6-10, several events celebrating Black History will take place, including Funky Turns 40: Black Character Revolution Animations Art Exhibition, presented by Black Archives History & Research Foundation. The Art Africa Miami Arts Fair 2017 from Urban Collective/Art Africa will also be worth a visit as well as the youth art collection on display at Ward Rooming House Gallery.
Little Haiti
In Little Haiti, the Now or Neverland Art Fair: Ode to Hip Hop will take place at Little Haiti Cultural Complex from Dec. 6-10. The Caribbean Marketplace will also be happening for attendees looking to have conversations with Caribbean artists and check out some native cuisines.
West Coconut Grove
KROMA Art Space & Studios presents The Miami Photography Project by Robert Sullivan City of Miami Cityscape with a reception and artist talk throughout next week.
Downtown
Lastly, PRISM Art Fair will take place downtown from Dec. 5-17. If you’re already down there, you might also want to check out the Neither Day, Nor Night exhibit from John Dunkley at Perez Art Museum Miami, on display until Jan. 14.
