Commune Hotels + Resorts recently announced that it will be opening the 125-room Thompson Playa del Mexico in 2015, which will be the second Thompson property located in Mexico after the Thompson Los Cabos project opens that that same year. Prevue spoke with Commune Hotels + Resorts CEO Niki Leondakis about why Commune is opening the Thompson Hotels brand in the Mexico market and what it means for meetings.
Why has Commune decided to open the Thompson Hotels brand in Mexico?
Leondakis: Mexico is one of the hottest destinations in Latin America, attracting visitors from all corners of the world. We’ve definitely had our eye on the market and feel that the style and sophistication of the Thompson Hotels brand will translate well to a beach resort location. With regard to the economic outlook, Los Cabos has experienced a strong recovery in the tourism sector, in part due to road and airport infrastructure projects, while Playa del Carmen is the fastest growing resort town and experiencing a development boom. With both projects, we’re fortunate to be in privileged locations and to be working with leading Mexican developers who know the market.
Thompson Los Cabos is our first Thompson hotel in a resort environment, and it will offer Cabo a distinctly unique resort experience from what is there currently. Thompson Playa del Carmen will be the first branded, lifestyle boutique hotel in Playa and part of a transformative, mixed-use project, replete with well-curated retail.
What do opening new properties in Mexico mean for the Thompson Hotels brand?
Introducing the Thompson Hotel brand to Mexico marks Commune’s ongoing expansion into resort areas and the growing presence of Thompson-branded lifestyle hotels in Latin America. We aim to attract locals and visitors alike by bringing a fresh, innovative concept and our lifestyle ethos with our two properties currently under development in Mexico.
What about the Thompson Hotels brand stands out to meeting planners, compared to other properties in Mexico?
The Thompson Hotel brand successfully combines luxury and sophistication throughout its hotels that naturally appeals to meeting planners. We feel our Thompson resorts in Mexico will be attractive to high-end incentive travel planners and to creative industries, such as entertainment, advertising, and fashion and beauty, which are continually on the lookout for distinctive, sexy venues to host product launches, photo shoots and VIP events.
Our resorts are situated in the most desirable locations in their respective destinations. Located on a private stretch of beach, Thompson Los Cabos will offer sweeping views of the famous Arch in Cabo San Lucas from each of its 115 guest rooms. Thompson Playa del Carmen will occupy two coveted locations in the center of Playa; it will be the only hotel to have both a central 5th Avenue and beachfront location, offering the perfect blend of culture and nightlife and serene beach experience.
Both resorts will offer premium special events facilities—ranging from rooftop lounges, intimate specialty bars, and exquisite private dining rooms to exhibition kitchens, event terraces and private beach clubs.
How will the Mexico properties reflect the destination in which they reside?
Each Thompson property’s design is conceived to evoke the spirit and individual intricacies of its location. With Thompson Los Cabos, the look and feel of the hotel will pay homage to Mexican craft, while being infused with a distinct Baja California overtone. The property will be rife with Mexican accents and touch points, such as hand-made woven rugs and tiles, along with influences from the local surf culture. An eclectic range of Mexican delicacies will be served at our restaurants, bars and lounges, with each venue providing a unique focus.
