Magma Convention Center
Tenerife, Spain is one of the largest Canary Islands, it’s mild climate and volcanic landscape attracting a steady stream of large U.S. groups. The exotic island is full of indigenous species, prehistoric forests, breathtaking lava landscapes and more than 300 whales for viewing throughout the year.
The destination provides planners with a variety of five modern and flexible convention centers within easy access to two international airports and direct connections to 147 different hubs. The city is only 2.5 hours from Madrid/Barcelona and includes direct flights from London on a daily basis.
Book the Magma Convention Center for large groups of 2,500. The unique and contemporary exterior design was inspired by the volcanic rock formations that are found throughout the area. Previous groups to book the venue include Swarovski, Audi, John Deere, Allergan, Sanofi, Telefónica, Thomas Cook, Tui, Statoil and Oriflame.
Other options include the Arona’s Pyramid convention center with an auditorium for 2,000 delegates. The venue is surrounded by the Mare Nostrum Resort campus, making it easy for planners who want to stay onsite. The Puerto de la Cruz Convention Center has capacity for 800 and is located in the charming town of Puerto de La Cruz. The Auditorio de Tenerife, including a 1500-seat ballroom, and the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Exhibition Center were both designed by Spanish Architect Santiago Calatrava, in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
In Tenerife, there are ten DMCs that work with meeting/incentive travel groups.
“The main objective of the DMCs is to promote innovative programs to surprise the groups with tailor-made alternatives,” says Stephanie Wear, consultant of economic development for Tenerife Tourism.
Schedule an evening visit to the Teide National Park. Mount Teide, the highest mountain in Spain. For a more privatized affair, organize a jeep excursion when no one else is in the park and drive up over rocks to see the sunset over the clouds. Afterwards, gather near a volcano for dinner, followed by a stargazing activity. Other highlights include dinner at a banana plantation, a sailing excursion, cave tours and whale watching.
“We ensure you that the group will see some of the 300 non-migrating whales that populate the Southern coast of Tenerife,” says Wear. Tenerife is also a popular destination for wine lovers. Visit the Icod the los Vinos or Garachico wine country for a group tasting or teambuilding activity that overlooks the sea and the mountains. Wineries also book events in the middle of the Laurisilva Forest.
For U.S. groups, there are a variety of brands that are found throughout the area, each inspired by the local culture and lifestyle. The Abama Golf & Spa Resort by Ritz Carlton, the Sheraton La Caleta Resort & Spa and the Gran Meliá Palacio de Isora are popular venues with large amounts of meeting space.
