Badlands National Park, South Dakota

Whether its riding the trails in a covered wagon, learning about Native American culture or living out your Old West gambler fantasies in historic Deadwood, South Dakota has it all.

Here are some of our top picks to consider for your next meeting or event:

Hands-On Adventure

“The latest trend that we’ve seen in South Dakota is a shift to experiential travel,” says Cole Irwin, global travel and trade director, South Dakota Department of Tourism. “Attendees are interested in not just seeing a monument from the distance, but jumping in and experiencing it. There has been a large increase in meeting planners looking for a hands-on learning or adventure opportunity.”

Hiking in the Badlands

And the state has a lot to offer adventurous groups, whether it’s a “Buffalo Safari Jeep Tour” in or helicopter ride over Custer State Park, hiking through the Badlands National Park, a covered wagon ride at Ingalls Homestead or even a private spelunking adventure at Rushmore Cave. Groups should also check out the Mount Rushmore National Memorial or take in the world’s largest mountain carving in progress at the Crazy Horse Memorial, honoring the history and heritage of the Native Americans. VIP access to the top of the mountain is also available, and attendees can be inspired by a Native American performance.

Wild West Retreats

The historic Old West gaming town of Deadwood in the Black Hills can accommodate everything from executive retreats to full-scale conventions. Groups can enjoy over 80 historic gaming halls and nightlife establishments, or explore Wild West history with a bus tour and trip to Mt. Moriah Cemetery to hear tales of legendary gunslingers Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane.
