Le Méridien Hotels & Resorts caters to the coffee drinker. In September, the hotel brand revealed a survey on global coffee and travel habits that coincides with the announcement of its new Master Barista program, which will give meeting attendees insight into coffee trends worldwide.

The survey, conducted in July, revealed that 78 percent of the 7,455 coffee drinker respondents from the U.S., China, France, Germany, India and the United Arab Emirates would rather give up alcohol, social media or sex with their spouse for a year rather than give up coffee. To meet the needs of these global coffee fiends, Le Méridien is launching a Master Barista program that will introduce a dedicated coffee expert in every hotel by the end of the year.

“I think what really sets us apart from other hotels and even the travel industry as a whole is the way we view coffee,” says Brian Povinelli, global brand leader for Le Méridien. “We view coffee as an art and an integral part of the brand’s culture, rather than a commodity that a hotel has to offer.”

The Le Méridien Master Barista will undergo an intensive training program designed by the hotel brand and its global coffee partner, Illy. Upon completion of the program, each barista will be able to lead coffee-related initiatives and standards at the hotel and serve as a coffee cultural ambassador who keeps up with current coffee trends and raises the community’s awareness of coffee.

While the coffee programming offered at each hotel will differ slightly, a key part of the Master Barista program will be to provide educational and interactive experiences for hotel guests, which can be incorporated into a meeting or group activity. From creating specialty menus based on the recommendations of Master Baristas to special workshops and tutorials, the Master Barista program lends itself to creative collaboration between the coffee pro and the meeting planner.

“The Master Barista program builds upon Le Méridien’s coffee house atmosphere and elevates the meeting experience by offering quality coffee beverages in addition to a space for visitors to engage and interact with a highly knowledgeable Master Barista,” says Povinelli. “Tutorials and master classes with a Master Barista can also be incorporated into the meetings experience for a refreshing and informative coffee break.”
